Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Fans of 80`s and 90`s Dead be heard!!..for Jerry never sounded better!

These are facts that need to be heard. It seems to me that a gaggle of older heads who worship 70`s Dead like that was their best years,is all I ever seem to hear from,I simply can`t agree with such foolishness. It wasn`t until the late 80`s when the voice of Jerry came into bloom only to mature into the 90`s.The age-ripened voice brought more feeling and heart to songs than at any other time in his career. It was only now, that we experienced Jerry with true emotions on stage,as if he was living through the lyrics.Songs such as So Many Roads,SOTM,Days Between and Believe It Or Not,would have never sounded and made the impact they did,if they had been released in earlier years.Simply because the band and Jerry hadn`t come of age and perfected what we all loved so much!! Then there is the new sounding guitars, such as his trusty"Bolt"and MIDI that turned favorites like Ramble On Rose and others into new masterpeices. How anyone can be so negative about these shows is beyond me and many others.Open your Fucking ears and hear the joy, heart and emotion that only latter years brought out!I have no problem saying that the power andhonesty in the music in the 80`s and 90`s can stand its on its own next to any show from the 70`s.Before you get to ranting on my thoughts, know that i love the 70`s just as much, they rocked! But it was missing something that wasn`t perfected until later. So let`s hear it,come with your negativity and especially lets hear from the others like me.

Well.. An interesting point of view, and there is some merit in looking at it that way . Part of me thinks you are crazy... but, though I still think the pre-Brent era is the most satisfying , and consistent , I even like stuff from 95 ! I think you are correct, in that he could be a very effective vocalist in the late period . His voice didn't have the range it had earlier, but his artistic instinct was maybe more mature . Now I don't count yelling "Be with you" over and over ( ant the end of SOTM , hey, easier than doing a solo ...) as an example of "maturity" myself, but I know that gets it for some .
When Dylan's "Time Out of Mind", came out, Elvis Costello, said it was the best Dylan album ever . Well, Elvis is a smart guy, but , sorry , I love the record, but I think he is overstating it .
Oh well, glad you have such a refreshing , iconoclastic opinion ! Maybe I can lean something from it .

Maturity comes to us in different ways and at different times. I am relearning this every day. I recently posted about SOTM in response to another post by the starter of this one in an honest effort to show concordance. I mean, I like the song. He sang I’d rather be with you. ‘Hey easier than doing a solo?’ He soloed also. To vamp the line (with feeling) isn’t a bad thing to me - Jerry was my king of soul.

It is stupid for me to get pissed over anything here, and replying to you here may not be the most prudent thing to do, but the tone of the guys remarks didn’t sit well with me, and that is kinda crazy since I love the same music he does. I just don’t see the value of his approach. Unless it is to show how ridiculous things can be. Regardless, I mean no offense to you DD. Peace, Dan

To be honest , I'm often can get annoyed by too much repetition in any song ( though you are right that Jerry's vamping had his innate soul behind it), and vocal histrionics at the end of a song ( LLRain) can work live, but in the cold of a stereo listen can seem like wasting time , for me , and that is not all the time .
Hell I like James Brown's "Please,Please,Please", and try counting the times he says "please in THAT song !
No offense taken, just "ratchet jawing" 'bout this band we all love .
Peace to you too !

I hear you on this for sure...Bob at the end of a LL, NFA, or even SugMags, really drives the wife, and the one kid that LOVES them, crazy...he rates SugMags, one his favs, according to how many screams Bob does...(SSDDream, strictly speaking of course).

That' pretty funny ! I can see someone shaking his head , putting check marks on a scorecard . New feature in Deadbase, "scream rating".

I think there's a lot of merit in the idea that Jerry's singing was more 'soulful' in the later years, and that his age-gravelled voice opened up new depths in some songs. I don't really hear improvement in the guitar-playing though (maybe saying more with less notes, sometimes), but a lot of people argue there's more maturity in his playing as well.

Time Out Of Mind was Dylan's best since at least '75....not "ever", but it was a long time! I loved his singing on those '90s albums, a great example of what you can do with an aging croaky worn-out voice....

In fairness to Elvis C., I'm think his comment was imade n the flush of enthusiasm for the the album, considering we though, at the time, Dylan might not do another,
and that it was SO good (indeed maybe his best since Blood on the Tracks) .
In the album and the one after, Love & Theft, he used his broken ( even by his standards ) voice to often great effect , chilling sometimes ("Standing In the Doorway crying "). For me, on the last few albums, it hasn't worked as well .

Ramble on Rose a masterpiece???!!! That's a bold statement. Usually an artist has one masterpiece (if he or she or they are fortunate enough to create one) ROR is not The Grateful Dead's masterpiece.

No worries, we are everywhere. Thousands see/ hear it the way you do. It's just that most heads aren't wasting their time in this chat room. Only we are doing that.

IMO, 88-91 > 83-87(this is the single example of something from the 90's being better than something from before)..........the 80's can't be lumped......

67 unique
68 & 69 go together(Kind of)
70 unique
71 unique
72 unique
73 & 74 go together
75 unique
76 unique
77 & 78 go together
79 unique(because of new Brent)
80 unique(because of acoustic sets)
81-83
84-87
88-91
92 unique
93 unique(because Jerry left the live mix // not good, but unique)
94 & 95 go together

These are the "eras" as I see/hear them. So to compare decades seems overly simplistic.

yeah - i basically agree with ya Flow - except i would say:

87,89-90 > 83-86 (a minor change only to yours as far as Jerry's singing was concerned)

Jerry's vocals were phenomenal in Sept of 87 (imho) - gravelly, yet full of feeling

I tried to get your attn down below (eeeuuuww), but will restate: what saddens me about the whole thing is not that Jerry may have developed soul/distictive voice/etc (which I appreciate appeals to you, not me; that's fine), but with the whole CREAM/BlFaith thing outlined below, I feel that what we missed out on was what if Jerry took care of himself like SWinwood? What if he did all the other side projects (to prevent "rut-ism"), and yet, like EC/JB/GBak/SWin, could reunite and play a set or two not unlike 68, which is more or less what those individuals did in 05 and 09...that's all I ever been upset about.

Not at all upset that folks like the "new and diff Jerry" post 78 and drugs/smoking/heroin/fastfood/comas; all of those may have in fact "given him more soul"...but, I miss that he wasn't a health nut that could do what he did in 68, even if he didn't want to anymore (just like all the guys I just mentioned didn't really want to just go around doing CREAM/BlFaith reunions...clearly.

But, a healthy, happy, nonsmoking, sober/straight, nonfat Jerry in 2010 would be something I'd welcome.

Wouldn't anyone else?

Ha--well, I won't ever roll my eyes and walk out on ya bro! However, if we do ever get-together for the Great Forum Fun Fest and General Pre-Amsterdam Blow Out Party, I am confident that as you and I sit chatting, your wife and my wife will repeatedly bump into each other while walking away from our table, rolling their eyes (and thus not seeing where they are walking no doubt!...probably become fast friends with you and me to talk about).
